Routines, Regimens and Rituals

While building too much structure into our days 📅 can restrict creativity, there are some powerful benefits to be had from incorporating the three R’s regularly into our lives! The three R’s and their definitions are as follows:

Routine: a series of steps repeated in the same order 🔢

Regimen: a specific course of action 🚶‍♀️

Ritual: a ceremony to honor or represent something important 🕯️

Routine

Even though we don’t have to structure our entire day around a to-do list, having certain routines can be very soothing to the nervous system. For example, if every day we: wake up at 6am ⏰, get some exercise 🏊, eat breakfast🥞/lunch🥪/dinner🍽️ at the same times and go to bed 🛌at 10pm, we are teaching our bodies that life is stable, and we are safe. This provides peace ☮️of mind and is especially beneficial to children 👧🏽 👦🏻, people who suffer from anxiety 😟 and those on the autism spectrum 🧩. Having a routine lets your body relax since there are no ‘unknowns’ to confront.

Regimen

Consistent routine
Regimen

Regimens are helpful because they give our lives consistency. As we know, consistency is one of the key 🗝️ factors in ensuring a successful outcome in any area—whether that is in fitness 🚲, stress reduction 🧘‍♀️, skin care 🧼, etc.

Ritual

Ritual

Rituals are ceremonies we can perform that are imbued with special meaning. Whether we perform little rituals at bath time 🛀 such as lighting candles 🕯️ and playing music 🎼, smudge a room before entering or stand at the door 🚪 and wave goodbye to our loved ones as they leave for work or school 🚌 every morning, rituals give meaning to our lives.

The three R’s provide us with security, stability, significance and success. How do you incorporate them into your life? Let us know in the comments!
